meta4 History:
Get in a groove : Meta4 has been singing together since 2002. We sing soulful music, thick four-voice harmonies played out in call-and-response patterns. We like Curtis Mayfield, Ben Harper, old gospel tunes-- anything with a solid backbeat or a deep yearning in it.
Although we all play various instruments, this group is mainly vocals and piano. Lately we have added a variety of additional accompaniments, and we're experimenting with time and wider textures of sound. Our latest CD has about half of the tunes with a full band backing us up, yet we still like to do some a capella.
It has gradually dawned on us that men singing from the heart, yet maintaining a not so subtle underlayer of guts, provide an interesting statement on the music scene.
Where we perform: We perform at churches, at local festivals and at concerts like those at the local jazzz club, Kuumbwa. We finished our second CD -- check it out..
If you know of opportunities to open for someone interesting in the South Bay or wonderful house concert venues, and especially if you can suggest some festivals around California, we'd love to hear from you.
Jonathan Arthur
Jonathan is a singer, choir director, recording engineer and producer. His credits include Vocomotion, the Eclectic Company, Mt. Madonna Choir, Perry Como Singers, and many individual projects. He plays guitar and can sound like anybody. Really -- ask him to do Georgie Jessel!
Jon Kennedy
Jon is principally a pianist. He studied classical through high school, played trombone in orchestras and jazz bands. At home, he was exposed to a combination of opera, Southern Methodist hymns and Indian ragas. Put in stints as a choir director in two groups that mixed early music with some jazz and gospel. Currently he plays in a Brazilian trio, a jazz quartet and Meta4.
Eric Morgan
Eric's voice is that eerily clear one you hear up high on our tracks. He sings, plays guitar, bass and keys; he writes his own songs. Was in the Morgan Brothers in Santa Cruz and has rock and
barbershop credits that go way back. He cofounded the Bhakti Band in Oregon in the late ‘70s and returned to Santa Cruz to become a member of the Eclectic Company. Eric spends his days designing professional audio, video and television systems.
Richard Salzberg
Richard sings bass in a way you may not have heard before in
your life.
He grew up in New York, with a rich jazz scene, and somehow
picked up 'church' along the way.
He has been involved in a number of vocal groups in the Santa Cruz
area, incluing Spirit Choir, Wing and a Prayer, Mt. Madonna Choir.
